Long Live The People's Revolution

On this day, forty years ago, 11 September 1973, the democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende was overthrown by a military coup led by General Pinochet.

According to Wikipedia:

'After General Pinochet assumed power, United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told President Richard Nixon that the U.S. "didn't do it," but "we helped them...created the conditions as great as possible." (referring to the coup itself).'

According to another Wikipedia article "Pinochet's government killed at least 3,197 people and tortured about 29,000." One of the many killed was singer/songwriter and theatre producer Victor Jara along with many other artists and musicians.

No matter what the opinion of the Allende government might be it's noteworthy that the "people's revolution" in Chile that brought him to power was a democratic election.

My first "single" on the site is Whose Turn Is It Now? which has previously been available on the SCALA Higher Ground album.

I hope to add more songs soon.

Check out my RouteNote page.

Now on ... TwitMusic!

It might not sound inspiring!  TwitMusic - music for twits?

Nope it's Twitter's solution for musicians who tweet a lot.

You can hear me twittering on my very own TwitMusic Page!

Ornithologists and other twitchers beware!

(tweet, tweet, tweetly-tweet!)

Arigato, xi xi, merci beaucoup, thanks!

Thanks so much to everyone who came along to the "Robert and Jane Childs Appreciation Night" last night at SCALA's new venue, The Colonel Light Hotel.  I was very appreciative of the numbers of people there.  It was fantastic to again hear Catherine Blanch and Vicki Bennett, as both have had quite a long break from performing, as well as The Miller Trio, Corey Stewart and Andy & Marta.

And thanks for all the song requests that I couldn't fulfil last night.  Here's the recorded version of Sugar Addict featuring the late Ren Forsaith doing fine work on drums.  Adrian Miller (keyboard) and George Will (bass) are also playing on this track.

Playing with me - 4th April

Here's a bit of background on the acts playing between my two sets on Thursday, 4 April at the Light Hotel, Light Square, Adelaide. We commence at 7.30pm.

Catherine Blanch

Catherine Blanch

Catherine first played for SCALA last century.  She won awards in a number of song competitions and her songs appear on a number of SCALA albums.  She is a freelance journalist with Rip It Up magazine and she has been a full time mother for the past few years.  This is the first time that Catherine has played her songs in public for some years!

Adrian Miller

Adrian Miller

Adrian is the single most successful songwriter in SCALA's FOOM Song Competition having had a winning song in various sections on 12 occasions to date plus a number of other minor awards.  He has played in a number of bands including Robert Childs Elastic Band!

Vicki Bennett

vicki bennett

Vicki has won a number of awards for her songs and has played in the bands, The Outskirts and The Standard Deviations.  Her songs have been covered by various artists and have received extensive airplay.  Vicki hasn't played for SCALA for some time so it's about time she did!

Corey Stewart

Corey Stewart

Corey has played for SCALA for many years and has run a number of Open Mics around Adelaide as well as playing in a number of bands or solo.  He has also won awards in a number of song competitions.  Corey is also SCALA's new Time Lord.

Andy and Marta

Andy & Marta

Andy and Marta combine the extraordinary talents of Andy Armstrong and Marta Bayly, each of them award winning songwriters.  Andy has released a number of albums since the 1970s and appeared extensively on The Book Place children's television program.  He teamed up with Marta only a few years ago and in that brief time they have released three well received albums and have played at a number of venues and festivals.

The lineup is:

Robert Childs (short set) Starting at 7.30pm
Catherine Blanch
Adrian Miller
Vicki Bennett
Corey Stewart
Andy & Marta
Robert Childs (longer set)

Tuesday 12 March 2013

I'm playing, 4 April 2013

I'll be playing again for SCALA (Songwriters, Composers And Lyricists Association) at SCALA's new venue, The (Colonel) Light Hotel on the corner of Currie Street and Light Square (west side), Adelaide on Thursday, 4th April 2013.

Actually I'll be playing twice as I'm doing a short set to start off the proceedings at 7.30, then, I'll be doing a longer set after the other musicians play.  In between there's Catherine Blanch, Adrian Miller, Vicki Bennett, Corey Stewart and Andy and Marta ... and then me again.  All the other musicians have won many awards for their songwriting so it will be a night worth coming along to.  And admission is FREE!

According to the blurb on SCALA's Venue Page:

This opening night at SCALA's New Venue at The Light Hotel, Light Square is a Special "Appreciation Night" for Robert Childs, OAM, who retired from SCALA's Board of Management on 15 March 2013 after serving 25 years as SCALA Founder and President.

Doors open at 7pm.
